Before this warm up I was unaware of how to make the same color pencil look like a darker shade. I learned that by adding more lines to different parts I am able to make it look darker.
Charcoal was my least favorite medium to use, there were a few disadvantages. I was unable to blend the charcoal in itself therefore you can see the lines all through my drawing where I tried to make it darker. Charcoal is also very messy to use, by the time I was done drawing this piece I was covered in it. The last disadvantage was that you had to use a substance to set your drawing because the charcoal was so easily manipulated and messed up. There are some advantages to using it though. One is being you can have very dark shades as well as very light lights. If you are doing a piece with dark shadows, and know how to use charcoal, then it is easy to create these.
Pencil was my favorite medium to draw with. The advantage of the pencil is all the shades it comes in, sure you can layer the same color to get a darker shade but with pencil you can just get a softer pencil. I also found that it was easier to blend the pencil within itself to give it a smoother look. The last advantage I noticed is that if I were to mess up I could easily fix the drawing by erasing it. This can also be a disadvantage though, if you do not want something erased you have to be careful not to touch the drawing. The last disadvantage of pencil is that if you have a bold shaded drawing it is harder to grasp the very dark shades. It is much easier to do so with different mediums.
Pen was okay to use but at times it was tedious. The biggest disadvantages I saw were that the pen could not be erased. I had to draw in pencil first and then trace the pencil just to ensure I did not mess up with the pen. Also, though this may be my fault, my drawing was very big and when shading this piece with a pen I was unable to cover a lot of ground. The tip of the pen is so pointed that each line barely made any difference, to see a change I had to go over the same spot multiple times. There were advantages to this medium though. The first being that it was very good at making dark shades, though tedious to do, they all turned out great in the end. Also you do not have to worry about the picture getting messed up. Pen is the most permanent of the mediums we used so once a line is drawn there is no going back.
